A great pair of bell bottoms can look unfinished if the length is off. Too short and the flare loses its swing. Too long and you'll be stepping on them. Here's how to get it right.
Why length matters more with a flare
On straight jeans, an inch either way barely shows. With a bell bottom, the hem is the feature, so small differences in length change the whole line of the leg.
Measure with your shoes on
Always check length in the shoes you'll wear most. A platform or heeled boot needs a longer hem than flat sandals. If you wear both, choose the shoe you reach for most often.
What's the right length?
For most people the hem should sit close to the floor, covering the top of the shoe without dragging. Stand naturally, in your shoes, with your weight evenly balanced.
What to tell your tailor
- Bring the shoes you'll wear
- Ask for the original hem to be kept if possible, so the flare shape stays intact
- Mark where you want the hem while standing straight
- Check the fit through the thigh and rise at the same time, since a tailor can often adjust more than the length
Hemming at home vs. a tailor
A simple hem is possible at home, but bell bottoms are less forgiving because of the curve of the flare. For a vintage look that holds up, a professional is the safer choice.
Fit before length
If the waist or thigh doesn't fit, adjust that first. Length is the final step.
